And the award for My Favorite Husband Mother’s Day 2008 goes to… SLASH THOMPSON!!!!
This is a picture of us dressed up to play Rock Band this weekend with some crazy friends. Dan went all out with the nose ring and wig this time. He even painted on a gold tooth. No one can ever say that man’s not fly because he is.
Not only is he fly but he’s also the recipient of the MFHMD2008 award and I will tell you why. This year for Mother’s Day Dan asked me for a few gift ideas. I typed out a wish list, complete with links to websites, and then gave it to him way too late for him to order anything on the list in time for Mother’s Day. So he improvised.
I’m trying to consume less after following one of my reader’s advice to watch this video. When I do need something, I’ve been trying to buy more things second hand or from companies that follow fair trade practices.
On my wish list I’d asked for a fairly-made recycled glass pitcher, glass because it’s free of the toxins commonly found in plastic. (Yes I’m being assimilated by the granola-ites.)
So Dan took the kids to a giant antique shop where he spent over an hour walking them through the entire maze of breakable treasures looking for the exact right pitcher for me. He said he passed up several along the way, wanting to make sure he found one he knew I’d like. Be still my heart, it’s perfect! “Recycled” in the truest sense of the word, BPA-free and lovely. He couldn’t get me exactly what I wanted in time for Mother’s Day so he paid attention to the REASONS behind what I was asking for and got me something better.
At the store he let Laylee pick through every piece of jewelry she could find, advising her on my tastes. “Yes that IS pretty, but mom doesn’t really like to wear heart-shaped jewelry.” Heaven bless him for guiding her to a pretty bracelet I will actually WEAR! On the way home from the antique shop, they stopped for flowers.
I slept in late this morning and woke to find Laylee had created an avalanche of drawings for me, all on the theme of love, moms, mudders and LOVE. Dan made scrambled eggs with extra cheese.
From Magoo I got new non-slip potholders that match my KitchenAid perfectly and to top it off, I was presented with the final season of the West Wing so I can discover again whether Matt Santos, Latino for President, beats Allen Alda to become the next leader of these United States in Imaginary Political World Where I’m a Staunch Democrat.
And they were nice to me all day. And they made me breakfast. And I got to eat off the special plate. And Magoo magically fell asleep in the car on the way home from church and let me carry him inside and rock him like a baby for the better part of an hour, something he hasn’t let me do for months. It was a great day to be a mom and a great day to be married to Dan. How was your Mother’s Day? Was it a great day to be married to Dan for you too?
I got some extra cuddle time from my youngest too. They are so sweet when they are sleeping in your arms. *sigh* It made up for both of my boys waking me up super early in the morning.
We are fairly low key on Mother’s Day and similar holidays. The kids gave me presents they’d made at school and pre-school, and my husband gave me a card and let me sleep in, then took the kids to church while I stayed home to surf the internet and enjoy three hours of prime solitude. It was BLISS.
Nothing says Happy Mother’s Day like time away from the kids. ;>
Oh Kathryn, that photo – the last one. Oooof, goes my heart.
The first one isn’t bad either. You guys are bitchin’. I must play RockBand one of these days and when I do, I’ll invite you both over to guide me through it!
What a great guy! Dan rocks. (Har, har)
Happy Belated Mother’s Day!
That first picture is awesome and that last photo is, too. 🙂
So glad you had a Wunderful Muffers-Day. Things were good on the farm yesterday….complete with a trip to town to each happy meals & chinese take out in the van! We are cool like that.
Sailing in by way of BlogHer ads. I LOVE that first picture!
Awww…I want one of my kids to let me rock them to sleep like a baby. Of course the older ones might squish me a bit , but I’d still take it.
I had I think the worst mother’s day.
On Saturday we trekked 3 hours to get an u/s to let us know if I was ready for trying to have a baby. NOPE. all the drugs, weight loss and time, and still not ready.
I was thinking that my dear husband would be extra understanding but not at all.
He went out Saturday night (after 9pm) to “do some shopping) and then came home. I preceeded to bed where I cried for an hour and he watched The Weatherman in the other room.
Sunday came, I made breakfast, took the dishes into the kitchen, and then tried to get my child dressed for lunch with Grandma.
After lunch I left the house because I couldn’t deal with a non-caring spouse.
When I got home, I got this big hug and sad look with a “I’m a bad husband,” comment and the follow up explanation that he couldn’t find anything.
Supposedly there’s a card somehwere, but I haven’t seen it yet, it’s Monday.
Sigh.
hooray! no more presidential limbo…at least in the alternate reality. happy mother’s day!
Your husband sounds like a really thoughtful guy! My five year old gave me a card he made in preschool that contained some of his very first written words. I got teary.
My husband gave me five hours at Tully’s by myself to gorge on creative pursuits.
You know, Dan just didn’t do it for me this year. I was quite disappointed. Glad to know that you got some goods out of him, though. 🙂
Oh, my Goodness. Sometimes that little boy looks all grown up to me – but for this special day, he turned back into your squinchy little baby. I love that picture!
So glad you had a wonderful day and so proud of Dan for working so hard to make it happen.
Wow. I sat and just stared at the picture of you and Magoo for the longest time. It is the reflection of motherhood if I’ve ever seen one. Got all teary eyed. Just beautiful.
I’d give anything for a moment like that with my little guy.
Happy Mother’s day! :o) What a sweet day and precious memories!
Yes, it was a great day to be married to Dan, er no wait… I mean Mr. Right, at my house too. God is just so stinkin’ good to me.
(Loved your pictures, Kathryn. Perfect to capture what being loved looks like.)
You look so hawt! I can’t believe Dan dressed up for you.
Now, why didn’t you wear THAT outfit to the Earth-friendly pregnant convention thingey? I’ll bet you wouldn’t have had all the pregnancy comments in that!!!
What a great day! My boys got me a signed copy of Julie Andrews memoirs (squee!) and then at our small group last night the Dads watched the kids while the moms ate a special meal and did a little devo / craft in a kid-free zone. Glad to know I’m not the only Imaginary Staunch Democrat. *sigh*
Happy Mother’s Day! Sounds like you had an amazing day and major brownie points for the hubby for the thoughtful gifts. My hubby had to go to work right after church so I spent some quality time with the kiddos. At least that’s what he called it 😉
That last picture broke my heart! Lovely!
And it was a lovely day to be married to my guy, too.
You two love-birds look wicked-awesome! I told my hubs about your rock party, and he was all, “We are so gonna do that!” Looks like I gotta dig out my fingerless fishnet gloves and crimper really soon…
Hey – it was such a treat to meet you on Saturday 🙂
I am so TOTALLY going to have a dress-up Rock Band party! Thanks for the idea, this is going to be awesome!
